    Job purpose
    General Manager: Research will work directly with the Chief Marketing Officer in conducting cross industry primary and secondary research on a variety of policy, business, economic and nation brand matters utilising several sources, internal and external. To design, manage and execute research relevant analysis and strategies that support Brand South Africa to track and report on how the country brand is performing, domestically and internationally as aligned to the annual performance plan.

    Minimum Requirements
    • Post graduate Degree in Political Science / Economics / Sales/ Research and Marketing/Business Management / Communications or equivalent.
    • 10+ years combined experience in Research, Marketing and Communications environments with exposure to strategic brand marketing and stakeholder relations at a senior management level.
    • Brand/System Contribution: Knowledge in brand development and how it contributes to ROI. This includes understanding drivers that influence how it links to the overall business performance and reputation management strategies.
    • Working knowledge of systems and processes involved in nation brand management as informed by research insights, awareness measures and competitor analysis that contribute to organisational performance.
    • Developing and articulating a research strategy (insight generation, model development, analysis monitoring,)
    • Good understanding of the political and legislative environment (domestically, in the continent and internationally).
    • Thorough knowledge of the workings of the business and macro-economic environment (domestic and international).
    • Understanding the socio-economic environment (domestic and international).

    Key Performance Areas:

    1. Development, implementation and management of data to the brand intelligence strategy
    • Development of a brand intelligence strategy, aligned to the overall Brand South Africa strategy and resource plan (budget & human).
    • Support strategic brand planning processes for domestic, continental and international positioning of the Country Brand.
    • Conceptualization and development of new reports and analytics that tie the organisation’s data to specific marketing decisions and problems.
    • Marketing/Business Planning – Support the brand planning/strategy process to ensure robust marketing intelligence and forecasting to facilitate decision making.
    • Manage the identification, reporting and analysis of internal and external sources that provide relevant competitive intelligence in the marketplace.
    • Lead the development & approval of Brand South Africa briefs to brand agencies in relation to relevant Research reports and results.
    • Enhanced SA brand in local, continental and international Research environment.
    • Support Strategic Marketing, Communications and Stakeholder teams to build capabilities and systems.


    2. Research specialist skills development and management for expansion of knowledge base
    • Interact extensively to develop new concepts adaptable to the changing reputation environment.
    • Develop a strong industry expertise database including academia.


    3. Staff Management
    • Delegate, coach and guide team on work assignments and tasks ensure sufficient direction towards desired business outcomes achievement.
    • Provide direct reports with leadership, direction, to achieve work objectives and improve performance and skills.
    • Performance Management – ensure that team members achieve their Performance Objectives as per individual agreements.
    • Staff development, motivation and training.
    • Recruit respective staff and select.


    4. Risk Management
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented initiatives (including risks) and reflect this in the quarterly reporting in accordance with the contracted performance measurement and business plan scorecard of the organisation.


    5. Financial management/ oversight and compliance
    • Budget planning and allocation aligned to compliance to the legislative requirement including PFMA.


    Required Skills, Competencies and Attributes:
    • Ability to analyse and evaluate raw data and interpret into intelligence.
    • Excellent business acumen, i.e., strategic ability to position and sell Brand South Africa and initiatives in response to emerging political, business and environmental trends.
    • Media management, i.e., ability to handle media interviews in relation to the interpretation of research analysis reports.
    • Above average interpersonal and communication skills that enables relatability with the subject matter at various levels and platforms (people skills).
