New South African telescope to promote the sciences

A new telescope installed at North West University is expected to help find answers to some of the age-old questions humans ask, such as where do we come from. It will also be used in outreach efforts to inspire an interest among students and others in the sciences.

South African university plans telescope

A R70-million telescope is planned for the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The Hirax will be the university's legacy project, and will allow its astronomers to look back in time, to a few billion years after the beginning of time. It will consist of a thousand dishes of 6m in diameter each.

South African and Indian scientists team up

The fourth co-operation agreement in the field of science and technology has been signed by South Africa and India. The two have a 20-year history of working together, which they plan to extend and deepen.

MeerKAT reaches another milestone

Four out of 64 sub-reflectors have been completed for the MeerKAT section of the Square Kilometre Array. And a new sub-reflector manufacturing plant has been opened by Stratosat Datacom outside Johannesburg to build the parts.

Design for SKA telescope ‘has been agreed’

African ministers met in South Africa to discuss the progress of the Square Kilometre Array which will be built in South Africa and Australia. Already Nine African countries are committed to the project, as well as several other nations. It will be partly located in Australia.
