With April marking the 22nd anniversary of South Africa’s freedom, we will showcase 22 monuments that pay homage to those who made this country great.

April in South Africa is Freedom Month, to mark 27 April 1994, the day all citizens won the right to vote in democratic elections and choose their own leaders for the very first time. In 2016 we celebrate 22 years of this freedom.

Dr Mo Ibrahim, businessman, academic and philanthropist, delivered the 11th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture at the University of South Africa in Pretoria on 17 August 2013. The theme for this year’s lecture was Building Social Cohesion and was a call to all Africans to work towards unity and democracy.
