South Africa mourns struggle stalwart Ruth Mompati
Ruth Segomotsi Mompati dedicated her life to serving the people of South Africa, joining the ANC
as a young woman. A champion of women's rights, she was one of the leaders of the historic
women's anti-pass march on 9 August 1956. Mompati died on Tuesday morning. She was 89.
Ruth Mompati statue ‘pays tribute to the past’
Eighty-nine-year-old struggle veteran Ruth Segomotsi Mompati said the statue of her recently
unveiled in Vryburg in the North West province "symbolises the struggle of all races" and should be
seen as a "mark of unity, which all must embrace".
