The African National Congress has been declared the winner of South Africa's 2014 general election, after securing 62.1% of the national vote. The Democratic Alliance increased its support nationally to 22.2%, while newcomers the Economic Freedom Fighters won 6.3% of the vote.

The Independent Electoral Commission will announce the final results of South Africa's general elections at 6pm on Saturday. With just over 18-million votes counted by 3.30pm on Friday, voter turnout in Wednesday's election stood at 73.4%.

Democracy was the big winner in South Africa's fifth free elections on Wednesday as people turned out in huge numbers, especially in the country's urban areas, to vote in a poll that, with few exceptions, went off peacefully and efficiently.

President Jacob Zuma cast his vote in South Africa's general elections at Ntolwane Primary School near Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday morning. "I hope that all voters will cast their votes freely, without any problems," Zuma said. "This is our right that we fought for."
