Residents in Qunu, the tiny village in the Eastern Cape that Nelson Mandela always called home, this week shared their memories of the former president, recalling how humble he was and the excitement they felt when meeting the world's most admired leader.

Nelson Mandela will be laid to rest at his home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Sunday, 15 December following a week of national mourning, President Jacob Zuma announced on Friday. The official memorial service for Mandela will take place at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 10 December.

As the country's flags were lowered to half-mast on Friday, South Africans from all walks of life continued to arrive at the corner of 4th and 12th Avenue in Houghton, Johannesburg to pay their respects outside the home of former president Nelson Mandela.

"This is the moment of our deepest sorrow," President Jacob Zuma said as he announced the passing of former president Nelson Mandela in a live address on national television shortly before midnight on Thursday: "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."

BRAND South Africa joined the rest of the country on Monday in welcoming the news of former president Nelson Mandela's release from hospital, saying it shared the joy of Mandela's family and wishing him "peace and comfort" at his home in Johannesburg.
