South Africa claimed five gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on the weekend - in lawn bowls, judo, swimming and sevens rugby. With five silvers and eight bronzes also in the bag, the team moved up to seventh place on the medals table.

Five new Centres of Excellence, which will be hosted at South Africa's top universities, will help increase the number of world-class researchers in the country as well as attract and retain research excellence, says Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom.
