Khi Solar One is Africa's first concentrated solar power plant. Situated outside of Upington in the Northern Cape, the 140-hectare plant will produce 50 megawatts of power by using 4 200 concave mirrors to reflect and concentratea large area of sunlight onto a small area on a 205 metre tower.

South African research team develops concentrated solar power system

The Solar Thermal Research Group at Stellenbosch University has completed a prototype system to help make generating solar energy more efficient and cheaper. The Helio100 system uses mirrors to focus the sun's energy on to one central point, turning heat into electricity.

New solar plants in sunny Northern Cape

Kathu Solar Park and Redstone Solar Thermal Power will each add 100MW capacity to the electricity grid. Concentrated solar thermal power is able to store solar power generated the day, meaning they will continue to supply energy at night. They add to the five plants already commissioned.

Khi Solar One: renewable energy for the ages

It looks like something from a sci-fi film, with its massive tower and thousands of wall-like solar mirrors set in an arid and deserted landscape. But Khi Solar One, Africa's first concentrated solar power project, is a very real example of the future of renewable energy.

South Africa opens its biggest solar plant

A new solar power plant in South Africa's Northern Province can produce 180 000 megawatt-hours of energy a year for South African residents, enough to power up 80 000 homes. The Jasper plant was completed two months ahead of schedule and will help the country meet its critical electricity needs.

N Cape solar projects steaming ahead

Spanish group Abengoa has completed construction of the tower section of South Africa's first concentrating solar power plant, one of three CSP plants being developed in the Northern Cape that will add 200 MW of renewable energy to the country's national grid.

Independent Power Producers chosen

The Department of Energy has announced the names of 19 bidders who have been selected as the preferred bidders for the renewable energy Independent Power Producers (IPP) programme, and has appealed to the financial sector to provide financing to selected bidders.

Preferred green energy bidders chosen

South Africa has released its first list of preferred independent power producers, accepting 28 bids from companies to generate over 1 400 megawatts of electricity from solar and wind sources.

South Africa becoming a renewable energy hub

South Africa is fast becoming a preferred renewable energy investment destination for both private and public sector investors – good news for the country's growing electricity demands, emerging clean energy sector and the economy.
