Work goes ahead on Mandela children’s hospital

The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital will be completed in February 2016, when it will be handed over for fittings and finishings. It is expected to open its doors for patients towards the end of next year. Recruitment is also under way to staff the institute.

Max Planck Institute invests in MeerKAT

The German institute is pouring R150-million into building and installing radio receivers on the MeerKAT radio telescope. The project, it says, will grant its scientists access to a world-class facility and its unique unrestricted view on our galaxy, and will boost MeerKAT's scientific potential even further.

Another milestone in MeerKAT construction

The 64th and final foundation for the MeerKAT radio telescope was poured on Tuesday at South Africa's Square Kilometre Array site in the Northern Cape. The MeerKAT is due to come online in 2016 both as a precursor to the SKA and as one of the most powerful telescopes in the world in its own right.

PPC to enter Algerian cement market

South Africa's PPC is set to enter the Algerian cement market through a 49% acquisition of local company Hodna Cement. PPC, which is already building cement plants in three other African countries, is aiming to earn 40% of its revenues outside of South Africa by 2017, says CEO Ketso Gordhan.
