This year marks Athol Fugard's 83rd birthday and the 20th anniversary of the death of Barney Simon, two giants of South African theatre. To mark the occasion two of their great works have been restaged for a new audience, and will be performed at the National Arts Festival.

South African playwright Athol Fugard, the creator of anti-apartheid masterpieces such as Blood Knot, The Island and Master Harold ... and the Boys, has been named as the first African recipient of a Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award, Japan's highest honour in the arts.

South Africa’s Athol Fugard was honoured with a special Tony award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. In its citation the awards committee described him as a playwright “whose art has always spoken out against racism and who continues to be an active voice for freedom and equality”.
