Benin gallery keeps African art in Africa

Contemporary African art is carving a niche in the West African town of Ouidah, Benin. Known more for its slave trade and voodoo roots, the region is starting to draw visitors more interested in the arts and culture. It is also offering a space for expatriate artists to show their work at home for the first time.

Norman Catherine: Now and Then

One of South Africa's most iconoclastic artists Norman Catherine, is holding a retrospective of his 35-year career at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Entitled Now and Then, the exhibition features many of his works in oil, fibreglass sculpture and wood.

A Johannesburg law firm has partnered with a township car wash that doubles as an art gallery to sponsor a competition for young artists from Alexandra. There's been no shortage of entries - work by 35 finalists will be on exhibition in Melville and Illovo until 24 December.
