South Africa's 67 Blankets for Mandela charity has claimed the record for the world's largest blanket this month‚ creating a collaborative blanket large enough to cover two-and-a-half rugby fields - with the help of people around the globe and prisoners across the country.

A tapestry of colour surrounded the statue of Nelson Mandela in Pretoria on Tuesday when volunteers from 67 Blankets laid out more than 3 000 square metres of handmade blankets on the lawns of the Union Buildings to commemorate South Africa's 21 years of freedom.

On Nelson Mandela Day, thousands of blankets will be handed to underprivileged people, knitted or crocheted by dedicated "knit wits" around the world. It's all part of a campaign spearheaded by Carolyn Steyn, who is doing her bit to play her part for the common good.

The fourth episode of Brand South Africa's Play Your Part television series, which airs on SABC 2 on Sunday 6 July at 9pm, will feature a some inspiring South Africans who Play their Part in the areas of active citizenship and education.
