Photographed by Luke Harwood

South Africa is one of the world’s top birding destinations, with enthusiasts from around the globe travelling to feast their eyes on some of the 850+ species to be seen. Of these, 53 are endemic to South Africa and in terms of the Southern African region, close on 180 are near-endemic. The country is also a part-time home to migrant birds from Europe, the Arctic and Antarctica, Central Asia, and China.
