BRAND SOUTH AFRICA PHOTO CHALLENGE

Brand South Africa’s “#LoveMySA” and #FNBArtJoburg photo competition is a nationwide initiative designed to celebrate the vibrant artistry of South Africa. 

Open to all residents, the competition invites photographers of all levels to share their unique perspectives through their lenses. By photographing the essence of their South African experiences, participants have the chance to contribute to a collective celebration of the country’s rich heritage, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. 

 

Winners will not only receive cash rewards but also gain invaluable exposure for their work, potentially launching their photography careers to new heights.

 

The competition’s focus on both local and international recognition underscores South Africa’s commitment to showcasing its beauty and cultural richness to the world. Through the power of photography, the #LoveMySA and #FNBArtJoburg initiative aims to inspire, connect, and unite South Africans while also promoting the country as a destination for art, culture, and tourism.

Prize Overview

  • The total prize value is R90,000, which will be split into weekly giveaways.

Weekly Giveaway

  • A total of R30,000 will be given away each week for three weeks.
  • Each week, two winners will be selected, with each receiving R15,000.
  • There will be a total of six weekly winners over the three-week period.

Overall Judging Criteria

 

To ensure fairness and consistency, the following criteria will be used to evaluate all submitted photos:

  • Adherence to Theme: How well does the photo capture the essence of the daily theme?
  • Creativity and Originality: Does the photo offer a unique perspective or interpretation of the theme?
  • Technical Excellence: Is the photo well-composed, with good lighting, focus, and exposure?
  • Impact and Emotion: Does the photo evoke a strong emotional response or tell a compelling story?

Scoring System

 

To quantify the judging process, a scoring system can be implemented:

  • Each criterion will be assigned a maximum score of 10 points.
  • Judges will award points based on their assessment of each photo.
  • The total score for each photo will be the sum of the points awarded for each criterion.

Weekly Winners

  • Photos will be judged daily based on the overall criteria.
  • At the end of each week, the photo with the highest total score will be declared the weekly winner.

General Tips 

  • Be Original: Stand out from the crowd by offering a fresh perspective or unique subject matter.  
  • Be Consistent: Develop a cohesive style that reflects your vision.
  • Enter Multiple Photos: Increase your chances of winning by submitting multiple entries.
  • Seek Feedback: Share your work with others and be open to constructive criticism.
  • Enjoy the Process: Photography should be fun! Don’t get too caught up in winning.
  • Composition is Key: Learn and apply fundamental composition rules like the rule of thirds, leading lines, and the golden ratio. Experiment with different perspectives and angles.  
  • Lighting Matters: Understand how light affects your image. Experiment with natural and artificial light to create different moods and atmospheres.
  • Tell a Story: Your photo should evoke emotions or tell a narrative. Consider the impact of your image on the viewer.  
  • Edit Wisely: Use photo editing software to enhance your images, but avoid over-processing. Focus on subtle adjustments to colour, contrast, and exposure.  
  • Practice Regularly: The more you shoot, the better you’ll become. Experiment with different subjects, settings, and techniques.

 

Tips for Smartphone Photography 

  • Leverage Your Phone’s Features: Utilise features like HDR, portrait mode, and manual settings to enhance your shots.
  • Clean Your Lens: A smudged lens can significantly impact image quality.
  • Steady Your Shot: Use both hands or a tripod to minimise camera shake.
  • Edit Mindfully: Use smartphone editing apps to enhance your photos, but be cautious with filters and effects.
  • Capture the Moment: Smartphones excel at capturing spontaneous and candid shots.

 

Tips for Camera Photography 

  • Invest in Quality Gear: While not essential, good equipment can provide an advantage.
  • Understand Your Camera: Learn how to use your camera’s manual settings to control aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
  • Experiment with Lenses: Different lenses offer unique perspectives and creative possibilities.  
  • Consider Post-Processing: Use professional editing software to fine-tune your images.
  • Print Your Work: Seeing your photos in print can provide valuable insights and help you assess their impact.
  1. Eligibility
  • Open to legal residents of South Africa.
  • Participants must be 18 years or older.
  • Employees of Brand South Africa and their immediate family members are ineligible.
  • Employees of Agencies involved in this campaign and their immediate family members are ineligible.
  1. Entry
  • By entering the Photo Competition, participants grant Brand South Africa a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, create derivative works from, and distribute the submitted photograph(s) in any media or format now known or hereafter developed.
  • Participants warrant and represent that they own all rights to the submitted photograph(s) and that the photograph does not infringe on the rights of any third party.
  • Participants agree to release and hold harmless Brand South Africa & CLR SPC from any and all claims, damages, or liabilities arising from the use of the submitted photograph(s).
  1. Submission
  • Photographs must adhere to the following guidelines: 3MB-30MB, JPEG, no nudity or violence.
  • Multiple entries are allowed.
  • Submitted photographs become the property of Brand South Africa.
  • Start date: 26 August 2024 00:00:00. End date: 15 September 2024 23:59:59
  1. Judging
  • Winners will be selected by Adherence to Theme, Creativity, Originality, Technical Excellence, Impact & Emotion.
  • The decision of the judges is final and binding.
  • Brand South Africa and/or its agent shall be licensed to evaluate all submissions, including verification and judging, as specified in these terms and conditions.
  1. Prizes
  • The total prize value is R90,000, which will be split into weekly giveaways.
  • Weekly R30,000 Giveaway. 2x R15,000 winners announced each week for the next 3 weeks.
  • There will be only six weekly winners in a three week period.
  • The winners will be contacted via email and publicly announced on the Brand South Africa and CLR SPC social media platforms.
  • Taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winners. 
  1. Limitation of Liability
  • Brand South Africa is not responsible for lost, late, or misdirected entries.
  • Brand South Africa is not responsible for any technical difficulties or errors related to the Photo Competition.
  • Brand South Africa assumes no responsibility for any injuries or damages suffered by participants or others as a result of participating in the Photo Competition.
  1. Termination
  • Brand South Africa reserves the right to modify, suspend, or terminate the Photo Competition at any time without notice.
  1. Governing Law
  • These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of South Africa.
  1. Miscellaneous
  • By participating in the Photo Competition, participants agree to abide by these Terms and Conditions.
  • Brand South Africa reserves the right to disqualify any participant if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the competition as determined by Brand South Africa, in its sole discretion.
  • Brand South Africa’s decisions shall be final in all matters relating to the draw and no correspondence will be entered into.
