South African journalists excel at CNN awards
South African journalists won a number of categories in the 20th CNN MultiChoice African
Journalist Awards. The awards were handed out in Nairobi, Kenya, this past weekend. Keynote
speaker President Uhuru Kenyatta praised the journalists' efforts to tell their own African stories.
South African film chosen to air in the US
The locally produced South African film, Ayanda and the Mechanic, has been chosen
to be the focus of a well-known US African-American film festival movement. The film will air in
the US November.
A strong South African presence at Tiff
A 20-member South African delegation is at the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) to showcase the country as a desirable shooting location, as well as to provide budding filmmakers a chance to promote their work. Five South African features will also be screened.
Gates Foundation grant for developing data journalism in Africa
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $4,7 billion grant to support data
journalism in Africa. The International Center for Journalists programme will run in South Africa,
Kenya and Nigeria, including a journalism school in Cape Town.
South Africa’s Crime Line tip-offs bring results
South Africa's fight against crime is getting positive results thanks in part to initiatives such as Crime Stop and Crime Line. The latest quarterly report to the end of June shows that tip-offs from the general public are resulting in the arrest of suspected criminals.
