A digital literacy programme by the city of Johannesburg and the University of Johannesburg will tutor city residents in making constructive use of the city's free, public wireless broadband network, in the interests of job creation, economic growth and community development.
Commuters at Gugulethu and Khayelitsha taxi ranks will get access to free wifi, according to Project Isizwe, which will offer a cap of 250MB at a speed of 15mbps. Living without information is unthinkable, says the group, which also drives access in other parts of South Africa.
Mobile operator Vodacom has started the large-scale rollout of an EMV banking card that is accepted anywhere, and is linked to its mobile wallet offering, m-pesa. A chipped card, it is secure, and offers greater convenience, security and social inclusion.
Eskom has thanked South African consumers and businesses for their efforts, and urged them to keep saving electricity this summer as it continues with planned maintenance on its generating units.
