Brand South Africa CEO Miller Matola has joined the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in encouraging South Africans to register to vote in South Africa’s fifth democratic elections in 2014. The first voter registration drive is scheduled for 9-10 November.
IEC Voter Registration stations will be open from 8am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 November 2013Speaking from Johannesburg, Matola said, “As we are called upon to register to vote ahead of the 2014 general elections, I am reminded of the words of Sweden’s former Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson who said in 2006, ‘Acting for democracy is acting for peace and security… The only way democracy will prove itself is through a living relationship between peoples and their governments based on trust, accountability and the determination to deliver practical results.'”
“As South Africans prepare to commemorate 20 years of democracy in 2014, we can celebrate the strength of our democracy which is attested to by freedom of choice, expression and movement and regular democratic, free and fair elections.
“We must intensify this living relationship between government and citizens through an even more active citizenship for which the National Development Plan also calls. We must register to vote in the forthcoming elections and go to the ballot boxes to express our choices through the ballot box.
“Young and old are encouraged to participate in this vital expression of a nation’s democracy,” said Matola
IEC Voter Registration stations will be open from 8am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 November 2013. South Africans can also check the status of their registration by smsing their ID numbers to 32810.
