Mandeville Sports and Social Club is dedicated to improving facilities for athletes with disabilities in South Africa. The club was established by former Paralympian Andy Scott, who, in 1968, became the youngest world record holder in Paralympic history, breaking the 50 m breaststroke record.
Terry Bantock is taking on all eight legs of the gruelling Midmar Mile, aiming to raise funds for Mandeville Sports club to identify and nurture talented disabled swimmers This year, 52-year-old Terry Bantock is swimming the arduous Midmar Mile to raise funds for the Mandeville Club’s Aquatics Disability Swimming Centre of Excellence, to identify and support disabled swimmers with talent.
The Midmar Mile, the world’s largest open water swim, opens on 8 and 9 February 2014 at Midmar Dam, in Howick, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Established in 1973, it’s attracted thousands of competitors.
Bantock says, “I would like to personally raise as much as I can so I am leaning on my greater network to support this initiative within their means.
“Over the past year I have come to know the Mandeville community well, and you have my assurance that this charity is well governed and an extremely worthy cause.”
The eight-mile swim is split into eight legs, each one mile long and entrants can choose which leg to swim. Bantock aims to swim all eight legs. He says he will be matching patrons’ donations; “I will be matching your valued contributions, either big or small, with a personal cumulative cap of R10 000.” An amateur athlete, Bantock’s swum the race twice before.
