Pravin Gordhan was named the new minister of finance on 13 December, replacing David van Rooyen who was appointed to the role last week.

“On 9 December 2015, I announced the appointment of a new minister of finance, David van Rooyen,” President Jacob Zuma said. “I have received many representations to reconsider my decision. As a democratic government, we emphasise the importance of listening to the people and to respond to their views.

“In this regard, I have, after serious consideration and reflection, taken the following decision; I have appointed Pravin Gordhan, the current minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs as the new minister of finance.”

Gordhan held the post previously from 2009 to 2014.

“I have also decided to appoint Van Rooyen as the new minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs.”
