On 25 August a Cape Town based NGO will be hosting a fun walk that will benefit underprivileged school children across the Western Cape.

PSFA 2All proceedings from this event will go to growing the number of school children fed by the Peninsula Schools Feeding Association. The Blisters for Bread Fun Walk will take place along a scenic route through green point in an effort to raise funds to combat hunger amongst children attending schools throughout the province and hopes to attract thousands of walkers to take part in the annual flagship fund raiser.

In the year of 2012 the Peninsula School Feeding Association attracted just under 16 000 participants and this year they hope to increase that number to 18 000. Participants pay an entry fee of R42 to take part in the event, this amount is enough to feed 21 school kids for a day.

A study conducted by the Children’s Institute at the University of Cape Town revealed that every three out of four children attending schools in the Western Cape come to school having not eaten anything for breakfast and also went on to show that this figure is increasing rapidly.

“In an attempt to address this issue the PSFA is providing some of these children with well balanced meals on a daily basis at a cost of 10 million rand a year.”

To date the PSFA is feeding over 22 000 children at 111 schools across the province and relies largely on donations from generous members of the public to do so.
