South Africa Steps Forward: Three cabinet updates you’ll want to know

South Africa is closing 2025 on a strong and confident note after the Cabinet briefing that took place on 12 November. The briefing highlighted three developments that reflect a country steadily building stability, growth and global appeal. These updates are not only encouraging at a national level, but they also offer clear signals of progress that will shape daily life, business opportunities and South Africa’s standing in the world.

A sharper economic direction supporting stability and growth

Cabinet endorsed the 2025 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement which introduces a more focused approach to managing inflation with a single target of 3%. This ensures greater price stability and helps protect household purchasing power by keeping everyday costs more predictable. It also strengthens the investment environment, supporting steady growth and long-term confidence.

Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving essential public services, from healthcare and education to social protection while accelerating investment in energy, water and transport. These priorities form part of South Africa’s continued drive to strengthen the economy in ways that directly benefit both communities and businesses.

Job creation continues its upward momentum

The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealed encouraging shifts in the job market, with 248,000 new jobs created in the third quarter of 2025. Employment now stands at 17.1 million people, and the unemployment rate has eased to 31.9%.

Notably, construction, community services and trade were the biggest contributors. The surge in construction jobs reflects the country’s ongoing infrastructure rollout—an investment strategy designed to stimulate industry, improve services and open new pathways for employment. This momentum signals a strengthening economy supported by increasing activity across key sectors.

Tourism growth reinforces South Africa’s global appeal

Tourism continues to be one of South Africa’s brightest growth areas. Between January and September, the country recorded more than 7.6 million international arrivals, an increase of over 1.1 million compared to the same period last year.

Visitor numbers rose across all major markets:

  • Middle East: up 58%
  • Europe: up 29%
  • Africa: up 28%
  • North America: up 22%
  • Asia: up 11%

This strong performance highlights South Africa’s enduring attraction as a global destination and its ability to offer experiences that resonate with travellers from every region. The tourism rebound strengthens local economies, supports small businesses and contributes to job creation nationwide.

Together, these three announcements highlight a South Africa that is gaining momentum, supported by targeted economic decisions, expanding job opportunities and renewed global interest. They reflect a country focused on delivery, resilience and sustainable growth as it moves into its next chapter.
