Youth unemployment is one of South Africa’s biggest challenges; faced with this, one organisation is working hard to alleviate the problem by providing teenagers with the skills needed to become successful entrepreneurs.
SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation is a non-profit organisation that seeks out the entrepreneurial spirit in all teenagers.
Based in Cape Town, director Lydia Zingoni founded the NPO in 2012 as a means to overcome many of the challenges facing young people today. These not only include unemployment but also alcohol and drug abuse.
The foundation trains teenagers to start and run their own businesses; it also educates their parents on how to support their children who choose entrepreneurship as a career. In doing its work, the foundation hosts various seminars, workshops, conferences and exhibitions and targets schools, universities, churches and youth centres.
It has also hosted both BRICS and African Young Entrepreneurs conferences, and held its own entrepreneurship Olympiad in 2014.
Here, Zingoni talks about her foundation and what it can do to uplift South African youth.
