Nelson Mandela Foundation encourages the world to find sustainable solutions for a better future

A dedication to active citizenship is at the heart of South Africa’s character. The endeavours of responsible, revolutionary, and resourceful active citizens who take charge in times of need, remain instrumental in the prosperity of the country. The late Nelson Mandela embodied this outlook in many ways. The world draws inspiration from Mandela’s legacy and highlights it through the annual celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day (also known at Mandela Day) on 18 July. Mandela Day not only celebrates Tata Madiba’s commitment to a life of service, but it is also an international call to action for people to recognise their ability to make a meaningful impact others’ circumstance.

 

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, the custodian of Tata’s life and times, announced that this year’s celebrations are taking place under the theme “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”. The idea is that ordinary citizens, the non-governmental organisations, businesses, and the public sector can all play their part in making a positive difference in various sectors of society.

 

Brand South Africa, through its long-standing partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, participated in the inaugural Mandela Day Houghton Run on 17 July 2022, and the One Million Trees Campaign which is ongoing.

 

Inaugural Mandela Houghton Run

 

Starting and finishing at the Old Edwardians Club, the 8km race route incorporated some iconic sites in Houghton, such as Madiba’s house on 12th Street, the Sanctuary Mandela on 13th Street and the Nelson Mandela Foundation on 103 Central Street.

 

Members of the public showed up in their numbers to show their commitment to walking in Mandela’s footsteps.

 

Multi award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo participated in the inaugural event. Other supporters included ABSA, Discovery Vitality, Future Life, Indwe Insurance, King Edward VII School, Power FM, Shoprite, Ticketpro, Virgin Active, and Vision Tactical.

 

All proceeds collected through ticket sales via Ticketpro were reserved to support the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Discovery Vitality members also had an opportunity to collect points and they were encouraged to donate their Vitality rewards from the day towards buying a family a back yard garden started pack provided by Shoprite.

 

One Million Trees Campaign

 

Climate change has a direct effect on food security as it interrupts the availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality of food. As part of the 2022 Mandela Day Campaign, the Foundation committed to plant at least one million trees by 2024. To promote food security at a household level, at least 600 000 fruit trees will be planted, and 400 000 indigenous trees will be planted to mitigate the effects of environmental degradation.

 

The one million trees campaign started in the Eastern Cape province, which is Mandela’s birth province. Commencing on 16 July 2022, the Foundation and its partners embarked on a journey to from Mvezo, to Zwide, Vistarus and Kwanobuhle to highlight the plight of climate change and provide sustainable community focused solutions to its effects.

 

Discussions on climate change and food security are ongoing and will be further highlighted at the 20th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture that is taking place in November 2022. Brand South Africa will join fellow strategic stakeholders in supporting the Foundation as it hosts the lecture. This much anticipated discussion will be delivered by the Honourable Mia Mottley, the 8th Prime Minister of Barbados. Mottley was recently crowned a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environmental Programme for her incredible work in drawing attention to the crisis that climate change poses on vulnerable Developing States.

About the Nelson Mandela Foundation

 

The Nelson Mandela Foundation was established in 1999 when its Founder, Mr Nelson Mandela, stepped down as the President of South Africa.

 

Mr Mandela was South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On 9 May 1994, soon after our landmark election results were in, he was unanimously elected President by South Africa’s new Members of Parliament.

 

As Mr Mandela’s post-presidential office, it provided the base for his charitable work, covering a wide range of endeavours: from building schools to HIV/AIDS work, from research into education in rural areas to peace and reconciliation interventions.

 

Five years later, the Foundation began its transition into an organisation focused on memory, dialogue, and legacy work. A comprehensive refurbishment of the Foundation’s building provided it with an appropriate physical home, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. The Centre was opened on 18 November 2013, three years to the day after Mr Mandela last used the building as his office.
