Celebrate the life of Tata Madiba on #MTN MandelaDay

    Organisation/Company Name:  MTN

    Location (Province, town):  National

Activity: Every year, 18 July comes around, and we, as a nation, celebrate a great man’s birthday. This year though, our celebration will be with a heavy heart as our Tata is no longer with us, but even though he is no longer here, it does not mean that we should not celebrate his life.

MTN are celebrating the life of Tata Madiba with something that we are all familiar with, something that resonates with us and something that brings us together: music. Music has always formed such a vital part in our lives through both the happiest and saddest of moments, and so this year, on 18 July, MTN will be hosting a Mandela Day concert with performances by Davido, Praiz, Mafikizolo, Oskido, Uhuru, Harrysong, EmmyGee, KCEE and Black Motion.

This honorary performance will be a first of its kind for MTN, and because we want the whole nation to be part of this celebration, you will all be able to stream it live, for free, right here on our blog at www.mtnblog.co.za or www.mtn.co.za. If you’re more of a YouTuber, you’re welcome to stream it via our YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/mtnza, but please note, that this will not be zero-rated. Standard data charges will apply.

    TREK4MANDELA

    Organisation/Company Name:  Trek4Mandela

    Location (Province, town):  Mount Kilimanjaro

Activity:In support of Caring4Girls and in celebration of 20 years of democracy, a group of passionate people will be embarking on the third annual Trek4Mandela.

Led by Sibusiso Vilane and Richard Mabaso, the explorers will drive through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania, and then climb the highest peak in Africa, Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro.

As they drive through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania, the volunteers will use the stopovers to distribute sanitary towels to selected schools, and they will discuss the legacy of Nelson Mandela with the youth. The trekkers will summit Mount Kilimanjaro on 18 July – Nelson Mandela International Day.

Richard Mabaso, of the Imbumba Foundation, founded Caring4Girls when he overheard his mother and niece talking about menstruation and the fear that it caused. He realised the difficulties that rural and disadvantaged girls have with menstruation. Studies have shown that girls miss a significant amount of school time because of their menstruation. To keep girls in school, Caring4Girls supplies sanitary towels and booklets titled Puberty and Adolescence Demystified.

Among the dignitaries who have heeded the call to action are Vilane, who will be leading the trek, and holds the title of being the first black African to conquer the Three Poles Challenge – the South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest (which he has climbed twice, by different routes), and Her Royal Highness Queen MaMchiza of the Zulu royal household, who graced the national launch and activation of Trek4Mandela.

In August 2013 Caring4Girls was integrated with the Royal Zulu Reed Dance, and the initiative became part of the Teach Children to Save South Africa™ initiative of The Banking Association South Africa. Lil-Lets We are Women provides the sanitary towels.

Vilane told Trek4Mandela: “I decided to participate in the Trek4Mandela because I want to help in keeping our girls in school and give them back their dignity and boost their self-esteem.”

The trek will also take place in partnership with Bongani Mountain Lodge and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The activities vary from community to community and have been put forward beforehand and planned for.

This year we plan to do: small maintenance jobs like painting, building fences etc; environmental activities such as planting trees or vegetable gardens and picking up litter, child-focused activities such a crafts, sports etc and then socially responsive activities such as taking the SHAWCO kids to senior homes to read and sing to the elderly so as to inspire a love for giving even at a young age.

We take strict notice of time and after 67 minutes, the students would get back on the bus, back to UCT and we await the arrival of another bus to the site.

This will continue from 10am – 18h00. Last year a total of 542 UCT students got involved and were transported to take part in activities which benefited the communities that SHAWCO serves on a weekly basis.
