Wondering what to do for your 67 minutes of Community service to celebrate Mandela Day on 18 July?
Gather up all your skeins of wool or spare pieces of fabric and head off down to Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel and Spa in the heart of the City centre. In the spirit of Ubuntu we are planning to knit up a storm and provide much needed blankets and warmth to those less fortunate in Khayelitsha.
Bring your needles and spend 67 minutes knitting or crocheting a 20cm x 20cm square or bring fabric cut to the same size and our wonderful ladies from the community initiative, DuNoon Design, will be making up blankets and quilts for donations. Their sewing machines will be working overtime as they craft the donations into cosy quilts in the Atrium of the Hotel.
As a tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on his 94th birthday, a beautifully mounted exhibition of photographs illustrating the life and legacy of this great man will be on view at the venue. Follow Madiba’s steps and take note of the inspiring quotes as we retrace his long walk to freedom to becoming the best-loved person in the land. This exhibition together with food stalls selling delicious winter fare will be the perfect place to participate in the global phenomenon, that is Mandela Day.
What better way to donate your time and effort and have a little fun as we see how many crafted squares we can collect so whether you knit, crochet or craft at home or with us at Mandela Rhodes Place on the day,help us to help others to keep warm this winter.
An added bonus for anyone who drops of bags off ‘squares’ or takes part in our knit-a-thon, is the opportunity to enter our competition to win a weekend stay at this award winning family hotel in the centre of the City. The Mandela Day event will take place from 09h00 until 17h00 on 18th July at Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel and Spa atrium. Drop off points will be positioned in the Atrium from the 10th to the 20th July and please ensure your name and telephone number is attached to your donation as entry to the competition.
