Play Your Part back on the small screen

Starting from 7 June, e.tv’s breakfast show Sunrise will broadcast a new 3-minute series called Play Your Part, developed by Brand South Africa, every Thursday at 7.35am.

Play Your Part is South Africa’s social movement campaign showcasing active citizenship amongst South Africans. The show will take us around the country to meet ordinary South Africans who are doing extraordinary things.

The series seeks to inspire people to contribute to positive change and become involved in their communities.

Speaking about the series, Brand South Africa CEO Miller Matola says: “There are a number of opportunities, big and small, where each and every one of us can play our part and make a positive difference in the communities in which we live and operate.”

JUST ONE BAG

Students from St. John’s Preparatory School in Johannesburg, were asked to donate a bag of mealie meal eachThe first insert profiles an 11-year old boy Jordan van der Walt who was moved by the plight of hungry children to start an initiative called “Just One Bag” to feed them.

Van Der Walt, with the help of his principal Patrick Lees, asked his school mates, from St. John’s Preparatory School in Johannesburg, to each donate a bag of mealie meal. The bags were then donated to charities which work with hungry children.

Ednah Zulu, a woman from rural Kwa-Zulu Natal, is another individual doing extra ordinary things in her community. She transformed one room into a 10-classrom high school that achieves a 70-80% matric pass rate in her small village. She played her part in changing the future of the kids in her village.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Later in the series, Play Your Part features 28-year old Dr. Liz Gatley from the Eastern Cape, who gave up a lucrative private practice and settled for rural life at Zithulele Hospital, situated along the Wild Coast.

Gatley always goes the extra mile for her patients, baking cakes, donating clothes, buying nutritional meals for patients who need the extra protein. Her compassion and commitment to making a difference is inspiring to the rest of the Zithulele villagers.

These are just three of the thirteen South Africans who will be profiled throughout the series.

The stories feature the old and young, rich and poor, from the rural areas to the suburbs. Stories of people who will lift the spirits and inspire all South Africans with examples of how their fellow citizens are creating a South African we can all be proud of.
