Brand South Africa embraces Global Dignity Day and Play Your Part Schools Clubs

JOHANNESBURG, Tuesday 15 October 2013 – Brand South Africa will join Africa Empowered to bring communities on board, to support teenagers to stay in school, through the Global Dignity Play Your Part Schools’ Club Programme.  The partnership will be launched on 16 October at the Umtata Christian School in the Eastern Cape to coincide with Global Dignity Day.

The programme, which aims to encourage a community-centric approach to the socio-economic, academic and entrepreneurial development of learners, will emphasise South Africa’s commitment to education, which is also articulated in the National Development Plan.

As part of the proceedings learners will share their experiences, having been part of this programme.  Learners will be encouraged to play their part for the growth and development of our country by staying in school and using all opportunities available to advance their learning and skills development.  This will be critical to ensuring that South Africa’s future is assured, by developing the youths’ skills base for a competitive and inclusive economy.

This partnership comes in the wake of the 2013 One Young World Summit which brought together 1,500 global youth leaders who deliberated on, amongst others, key issues that impact on their leadership abilities.  Critical amongst these is the need for quality education and skills development.

Media are invited as follows:

Date:      Wednesday 16 October 2013

Venue:   Umtata Christian School
898 Errol Spring Ave,
Time:     10h30 – 14h00

The day’s events will include an address by Brand South Africa’s Civil Society Manager, Leo Makgamathe, as well as poetry and rap performances by young people who are part of the Global Dignity Play Your Part Schools’ Club Programme.

“These young people are inspiring because they are serious about the future they would like to build for themselves and their peers. They have displayed initiative and leadership abilities, which will be key to realising the development goals outlined in the National Development Plan and Vision 2030. After all, today’s youth will make up the workforce of 2030, so their input and involvement is crucial,” said Mr Makgamathe.

What is the Global Dignity Play Your Part Schools’ Club?

The Global Dignity Play Your Part Schools’ Club has created a network of learners who are organised into clubs in their high schools, in various provinces around the country. These learners immerse themselves in projects that aim to instil dignity in themselves and others, while at the same time uplifting their communities. The programme comes at a time when there has been an increase in the number of violent incidences in some of the country’s schools. This initiative aims to restore dignity in the classroom. The programme was launched in various high schools in February 2013. Currently, over 600 learners countrywide are part of the network.

This intervention involves various stakeholders, who are brought onboard to ensure that learners obtain the necessary support to excel and focus in their academic and social lives. The top 50 learners per club, who are academically successful and have demonstrated leadership potential, are empowered with skills to help them become change agents in their communities. The initiative speaks to the spirit of Brand South Africa’s Play Your Part programme, which aims to mobilise all citizens to play their part, to improve the lives of others.

Global Dignity Day

As part of the Global Dignity Play Your Part Schools’ Club programme, Global Dignity Day is observed annually on 17 October, and seeks to rope in World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders, role models and thousands of volunteers to celebrate Dignity Days. On these days, the young Global Leaders speak to and encourage youth in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The aim is to instil a new, positive, inclusive and interconnected sense of value in young people that will guide them as they grow up.
