South African advertising agencies shone at the 2003 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival this month, scooping a total of five gold, eight silver, five bronze and three media Lions.

In all, 66 entries from 13 South African agencies were shortlisted for the prestigious Cannes lion. TBWA Hunt Lascaris was South Africa’s star performer with three golds, three silvers, one bronze and two media Lions.

“The South African advertising successes at Cannes 2003 highlights the immense creative potential of our local agencies”, said John Arnesen, general manager of the Marketing Federation of Southern Africa (MFSA).

“The outstanding accomplishment of black empowerment agency Saatchi & Saatchi, which scooped one gold and one bronze, tangibly demonstrates that the embracing of transformation principles need not translate to the sacrificing of world-class standards”, Arnesen said.
