Mbeki offers US condolences

President Thabo Mbeki has expressed South Africa’s condolences to the government and people of the United States following the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina.

“The government and people of South Africa wish to express their sympathy for the loss of human life during these tragic circumstances,” Mbeki said in a statement on Thursday. “The affected areas and its people remain in the hearts and prayers of the people of South Africa.

“On behalf of the government and the people of South Africa we extend our heartfelt condolences, in particular to the families of those who lost their loved ones.”

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, five South Africans living in New Orleans remain unaccounted for. Their names have not been released.

Independent Online reports that three women from Durban were evacuated to safety in Dallas, Texas late last week.
