The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a new website to boost interaction with the public and provide information on personal safety, community policing and crime-fighting initiatives.
SAPS head of communications Joseph Ngobeni said the SAPS Journal Online would allow South Africans to submit their stories about crime, as well as showcase stories of police successes and convicted criminals.
“The site will also provide South Africans, and the world, with stories ranging from policemen and women who risked their lives fighting crime and saving others to those of dedicated investigating officers who have spent days and nights pursuing criminals in order to bring them to book,” Ngobeni said.
Ngobeni urged South Africans to use the site to contribute meaningfully towards fighting crime in the country, adding that people could also use the website to report suspected corrupt activity among police officers.
“We are transparent. If there is any corruption, we are not going to sweep it under the carpet, and if some of the stories that come from the public will be exposing [corruption], they’ll be welcomed,” he said.
SAPS publications manager Strini Govender said the site would be updated daily, with stories coming from provincial communications officers.
