The Presidency has launched a section of its website for children, with the aim of promoting interaction between the government and the country’s younger citizens.

Speaking at the launch at the Union Buildings in Pretoria this week, to which a group of school children were invited, Minister in the Presidency Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said the website would educate children on how government activities were run.

“As the government, we want to create an environment where you can grow and learn about your government and what it is doing for you,” she said.

The Presidency Kids website is designed in flash to provide an animated and interactive experience for children. Key content issues include information about the symbolic importance of the national flag and the national anthem.

Tshabalala-Msimang said it was the government’s intention to continuously improve on the website so that in the future it can include critical information such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Union Charter on the Rights and Welfare of children.

A teacher from Dimakatso Primary School, Meisie Mangwane, said the website would help make classes more exciting while introducing learners to cyberspace.

“Computer access is an important issue for our school,” Mangwane told BuaNews.

Beauty Banda, 13, a Grade 6 learner from Boschkop Primary school, said the site was exciting because she could listen to the national anthem. “I did not know much about how government works … but now I will know where to go when I need more information.
