South African multinational cellular operator MTN has entered into partnership with Africa – The Good News, a pioneering website that tells Africa’s stories of hope and opportunity from an African perspective, as a legacy project of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
MTN, the only Africa-based global sponsor of the World Cup, announced the partnership at the 13th Highway Africa conference for African journalists in Grahamstown last week.
Productive investment climate
MTN executive Nozipho January-Bardill told delegates that the Africa – The Good News project relayed messages of African hope, goodwill and development without ignoring the challenges the continent was facing.
“The MTN Group’s exceptional growth since its founding in South Africa in 1994 bears testimony to the productive climate for investment on the African continent,” January-Bardill said.
“At MTN, we believe emerging markets present enormous growth opportunities for those with the appetite, dedication and capacity to harness their full potential for the benefit of all their stakeholders.”
Focus on South Africa and Africa
Africa – The Good News co-editor and publisher Stuart Pennington said that as South Africa geared up to stage the World Cup, the focus of 208 football-playing nations and an estimated 26-billion cumulative television viewers would be on South Africa and Africa.
He said the event gave the continent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the world what it was really about. “This website is intended to offer a fresh perspective on Africa, to highlight stories of progress and positive developments on the continent,” Pennington said.
“It is about hope and the new winds of change that are gusting over her nations and the growing opportunity in arguably the most ethnically diverse, biologically rich, scenically beautiful continent in the world.”
