Following Brand South Africa’s highly successful Football Fridays campaign, which united the country behind Bafana Bafana during the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Lead SA has called on South Africans to wear their cricket jerseys on Fridays as the Proteas gear up for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.
“Pure Protea Fridays” was launched on Tuesday, a day before start of a five-match one-day international series between the Proteas and India. The first match takes place Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has endorsed the initiative, as has Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola, who said on Tuesday: “Cricket South Africa supports any initiative that is 100% behind the Proteas! We congratulate Lead SA on backing our boys.”
The Lead SA initiative, launched by Primedia Broadcasting and Independent Newspapers in the wake of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, encourages the public to celebrate the achievements of the country while taking responsibility for its problems and challenges.
“Lead SA is getting behind all national sports,” Primedia’s Yusuf Abramjee said on Tuesday. “We supported Bafana Bafana ahead of the World Cup and created much excitement. We also arranged the very successful parade through the streets of Sandton two days before kick-off. It was the biggest show of support for any sport in the history of SA.
“We have decided to get fully behind the Proteas and mobilize the public because we believe our cricketers need the support ahead of and during the Cricket World Cup,” Abramjee said.
“We have declared Fridays ‘Pure Protea Fridays’, and will do so each week from now and throughout the tournament.”
Fans can purchase official “Pure Protea, 100% South African” supporters’ gear via cricket.co.za, at selected Sneakers stores and at all Protea home games.
