President Jacob Zuma has, on behalf of the government and people of South Africa, extended condolences to Japan following the massive earthquake and resultant tsunami that struck parts of that country on Friday.
The quake, measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale hit northern Japan on Friday afternoon (local time) causing widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure and creating tsunami waves that swept inland.
“I wish to extend our condolences to the Government and the people of Japan,” Zuma said. “The people of South Africa share the pain and loss of the loved ones, their homes and property and our thoughts and prayers go to the affected families.”
South Africa wishes the rescue and recovery teams every success in their efforts, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said, adding that the country stood ready to assist in whatever manner possible within limited available resources.
The department’s Consular Services is also in contact with the South African Embassy in Japan to assess any assistance required by South African citizens that may have been affected.
