Education experts and business have welcomed the Higher Education Department’s Green Paper on post-school education, but have warned that new colleges and universities must be properly resourced to produce quality graduates.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande announced on Thursday that he wanted to increase the number of young people in South Africa’s colleges six-fold by 2030, and planned to double the number of university students.

Education expert professor Graeme Bloch said the Green Paper contained many good ideas but expressed concern about where the money would come from.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Neren Rau welcomed the expansion of higher education, but was worried about quality.

Nzimande said it was impossible to predict how much the new institutions would cost at this stage, but wanted business to help educate workers.
