Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Elizabeth Thabethe is in Mozambique this week with a delegation of South African business people taking part in the Feira Internacional De Maputo (Facim).

The Maputo trade fair draws around 50 000 visitors and exhibitors from around the world every year. It runs from Monday through to Sunday.

The South African National Pavilion at the fair aims to showcase South Africa’s trade and investment potential while attracting potential buyers, distributors and agents for the participating companies.

According Thabethe, relations between South Africa and Mozambique are very close, underpinned by growing ties in trade, investment tourism, migration and security. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on economic co-operation in 2005.

In 2012, exports from South Africa to Mozambique stood at R18.9-billion while South Africa’s imports from Mozambique stood at R10.4-billion.

South African sectors targeted for the Maputo trade fair include agriculture and agro-processing, mining and capital equipment, electro-technical equipment, automotive components, security equipment and protective gear, and boat-building.
