South African petro-chemical company Sasol launched its “turbodiesel ULS”, with the lowest sulphur content in the country, onto the local market on Wednesday.
The fuel, with a sulphur content of 10 parts per million (ppm), will help to keep car engines clean while producing less harmful exhaust emissions, the company said in a statement.
According to Business Day, the fuel is compliant with Euro 5 fuel specifications and brings diesel users in the country in line with motorists in the US and Europe.
New regulations gazetted in 2012 by Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu require oil companies to introduce the so-called “Euro 5” fuel specifications – high- quality grades sold in the European Union and other first-world markets – by 1 July 2017.
“A key part of the Sasol turbodiesel ULS 10ppm is its advanced detergency,” said Mohamed Carrim, retail manager at Sasol Oil. “This prevents or removes deposit build-up in the engine and fuel system, allowing the engine to operate at optimum efficiency and sustain optimum fuel consumption over time. Continued use will maintain new fuel systems as well as clean up dirty fuel systems.”
Carrim said the fuel was suitable for all diesel cars, from the latest models to the older generation models, with or without turbocharging.
The fuel is available at 78 forecourts in Gauteng and Mpumalanga province and will be selectively rolled out to the other areas in 2014 and 2015.
