An historic national landmark, celebrating the heritage and culture of surfing, is to be established at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town where the first South African to ride waves standing up on a surfboard was recorded in 1919.
The Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame will be constructed on the traffic circle at Surfers’ Corner in Muizenberg, the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and the epicentre of the local surfing community, which has been acknowledged as one of the world’s top 20 surf towns by National Geographic.
The landmark will feature a life-size bronze statue of Heather Price, who befriended two American Marines and learned to surf on their solid wood Hawaiian surfboards nearly 100 years ago, and a Walk of Fame consisting of paved pathways set amongst landscaped gardens and studded with plaques honouring the past, present and future legends of South African surfing.
Launch function
A function to launch the concept and raise awareness and funds for the Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame will be held at the Muizenberg Pavilion on Saturday, 5 April, where a model of the landmark and statue will be unveiled.
The names of the first group of surfing pioneers to be included in the Walk of Fame will be announced along with the selection criteria for future nominees, who will be inducted annually.
The exclusive social occasion and gathering of the surfing “tribe” will feature many of the current legends of the South African surfing community alongside live music acts, audio-visual presentations and displays of historic surfing photos and artefacts.
Tickets
Tickets for the launch function are R250 each, or R2 000 for a table of eight, and are available by booking at info@thesurferscircle.co.za or can be purchased in Muizenberg at Rustenberg Pharmacy in Beach Road or Epic Print in Atlantic Road. Tickets numbers are limited and will be sold strictly on a first come, first served basis.
The Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame is a project of the not for profit Muizenberg Improvement District that has been inspired by the pivotal role surfing has played in encouraging economic growth, fostering cultural diversity, and gaining international recognition for Muizenberg as a destination of choice in South Africa.
