It’s all systems go for the final Freedom Friday celebration at the Rand Show at Johannesburg’s Nasrec Expo Centre on Friday.

The Department of Arts and Culture, together Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Lead SA, Brand South Africa and Proudly South African will host a short celebration at Hall 7 at the Rand Show from 10.30am.

Members of the public are invited to show their national pride and join the festivities. Flags, pins and badges will be handed out.

South Africans not able to attend the event can also mark the day by sharing their thoughts, video clips, memories and pictures of freedom via Twitter (@20_yof) or Facebook (www.facebook.com/20yof).

South Africans are also encouraged to show their pride, wear their colours, take a selfie and upload it to social media using the hashtag #FreedomFridaySelfie and/or #20YOFSelfie.

The Freedom Fridays Campaign encourages South Africans to wear anything that expresses their pride in being a South African – including the colours of the national flag, traditional attire, national soccer or rugby team jerseys, or anything else that reflects solidarity with the 20 Years of Freedom celebrations.

“We should come together as a nation to celebrate our achievements, own up to the remaining challenges and commit to working together towards a shared and prosperous future,” Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said at the launch of Freedom Month.

“Our programmes are geared at reminding South Africans, especially young people, of where we come from as a nation; that our freedom was not free and that we have an obligation to defend it jealously.”
