South African swimmer Cameron van der Burgh is on a roll. On Wednesday, he added the 100m breaststroke gold medal to his tally, following his win in the 50m on Tuesday. He is currently in the top spot on the overall best swimmers ranking of the first leg of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2015.
The races took place at the Federation Internationale de Natation (Fina) World Cup series, the first le of which was held in Moscow, Russia on 11 and 12 August.
The 27-year-old Van der Burgh outshone Nic Fink of the United States yesterday, pipping him to the post by 0.25 seconds. Fink came in second with a time of 59.52 and his compatriot, Cody Miller, bagged bronze with 1:00.07.
The three best swimmers in the overall ranking of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup after the first leg are Van Der Burgh, Marco Koch of Germany in second place and Miller in third place.
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary outshone in the women’s section, Emily Seebohm from Australia came in second and Vitalina Simonova of Russia third.
Other achievements by South African swimmers include Chad le Clos taking silver after Tom Shields won by 0.09 seconds (51.45 and 51.36 respectively) for the butterfly event. And Myles Brown added the 200m freestyle silver medal to the gold he won in the 400m freestyle on 11 August.
Russia’s Danila Izotov won that event in a time of 1:46.93, with Brown touching second in 1:47.80. Nikita Lobintsev, another Russian, came in third with his 1:47.83.
The FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2015 is now travelling to Paris- Chartres, where the second leg will take place on 15 and 16 August. This second leg will conclude the first cluster in Europe.
