The final voter registration drive before this year’s local government elections will be held on the weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April 2016. All adult South Africans are urged to get their names on the voters’ roll, so they can use their democratic right to choose the municipal leaders they want.
You can register to vote if you:
- are a South African citizen
- are at least 16 years old (you can only vote from the age of 18, though)
- have a green bar-coded ID book, a smartcard ID, or a temporary ID certificate
You can register at the voting station in your community. Dial *120*432# to find your voting station or use the voting station finder on the Electoral Commission website. All voting stations will be open from 8am to 5pm on 9 and 10 April.
If you can’t register on that weekend, make an appointment at your local Electoral Commission office to register there.
If you don’t have an ID, you can apply for one at your local Home Affairs branch.

More about the 2016 municipal elections
- Local government elections are held every five years, nationwide, to elect councillors to govern municipalities for the next five years.
- Municipal councils’ current term of office ends on 18 May 2016.
- Councillors serve on town, city, metropolitan or district councils. It is their job to deliver services to citizens living in their areas – including water, electricity and sanitation.
- The exact date of the 2016 Municipal Elections will only be known when the election is proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
- In terms of the Constitution the election must be held between 18 May and 16 August 2016.
